Connect with Autism News, Resources, & Supports in Nashua, New Hampshire

Hello,

I am new to this site so forgive me if there is another way of finding this information.  This fall my 2.5yr old daughter was diagnosed on the autism spectrum.  I have started my daughter on a gluten free casein free diet on the advice of friends and have seen improvement but I am in need of guidance.  Our current pediatrician has been ignoring signs and is of no help what-so-ever.  We even had to initiate and set up the neurology appointment. Can anyone recommend a pediatrician who deals with children on the spectrum and can help guide us in our next steps (whatever they may be).

Thank you,
Jessica

You will likely have to keep your current pediatrician or look for one who is at least more supportive. That said, there us an internal medicine doctor in concord who takes a special interest in the spectrum kids (known as a DAN!) You can look into it if you want. I know a few people on this website use or have used this doc:
Dr. Lyn Durand
Center for integrated medicine
Concord nh

I've had great luck with Parners in Pediatrics in Nashua.  We have Dr. Glidden.  But I've seen Dr. Kaupp many times and they are both great.  I've received some good referrals from them as well.  Like Courtney mentioned, my daughter in addition also see's a DAN doctor for the integrated approach. The pediatricians know and don't give me a hard time about it.  They saw my daughter when she was very sick and what the DAN approach did to help.  I have some great specialist like GI, Immunology, and neurology that help with the support as well.  A good team is essential.

Thank you both for the response.  I have heard of Partners in Nashua.  They were recommended years ago when I had my first child.  I should have listen then.  So in addition to your pediatrician you see a DAN doctor?  Is this a developmental pediatrician?  This doctor would help coordinate all the pieces that seem to be involved? (Neurology, GI, Heavy Metal thing, Genetics).  I am new to all of this so I am just trying to find the best path to proceed.  We initiated the GFCF diet based on recommendations from friends and it really seems to be helping.  I am trying to read and research as much as possible to determine our next steps.  So your opinions and suggestions are helpful and truly appreciated.  My husband and I are trying to organize childcare so that we can go to the meeting Wed 2/1.

Hi Jessica,
I know how you feel...I was in your shoes not too long ago and was a bit confused about where to start too. We use our pediatrician for our regular care then we go see the DAN doctor every few months specifically for the symptoms of autism. Our Dan doc is not a developmental ped, although you might find one that also happens to be. On our first visit, he observed my child and examined him. Mostly he listened to the things I had to say and all the behaviors we were experiencing. Then he gave me a couple treatment options to start with while we under went a few test. And I don't want to push my opinion, but I really couldn't be happier. We have come a long way since our first visit and I don't think we would be where we are today with out our DAN.
Our DAN does not coordinate other visits such as GI and neuro though. Our regular pediatrician gives us referrals for that stuff.
Also, if your still in the research phase of this, I read a ton of books on the subject when I was in my research phase and the two that I think were the most helpful were:
Changing the course of autis by Dr Bryan jepson
And
Healing the new childhood epidemics:Autism,Asthma, adhd and allergies by Kenneth Bock.

Courtney, if you don't mind me asking, who is your DAN doctor.  Is he local?  I drive over 4 hours one way to see ours.  I feel like we don't go as often because I dread the drive and phone conference isn't the same as being there.

the choices in NH are limited ( I think there is only 2 dans! In the state right now. We use DR. Lynn Durand in concord. His exam room is large which is great because my kid feels confined in small/standard rooms. The waiting room is relaxing with water features, soft colors and dim lights. We really like him and he lets me direct the pace at which we try things for the most part. I would definately recommend him, but we have never used anyone else so we have no basis to compare :-)
by the way, Dr. Durand also specializes in LYME disease, which my child also has...so, we get a two birds one stone feeling.

Michelle, we see a DAN! in Salem, NH.  Dr. Luke Huber and Dr. Candace Sholl.  We LOVE them.  If you want any information about them let me know, I'll be happy to share.
